Children's Literature in Translation : Challenges and Strategies

Description

Children's classics from Alice in Wonderland to the works of Astrid Lindgren, Roald Dahl, J.K. Rowling and Philip Pullman are now generally recognized as literary achievements that from a translator's point of view are no less demanding than 'serious' (adult) literature. This volume attempts to explore the various challenges posed by the translation of children's literature and at the same time highlight some of the strategies that translators can and do follow when facing these challenges. A variety of translation theories and concepts are put to critical use, including Even-Zohar's polysystem theory, Toury's concept of norms, Venuti's views on foreignizing and domesticating translations and on the translator's (in)visibility, and Chesterman's prototypical approach. Topics include the ethics of translating for children, the importance of child(hood) images, the 'revelation' of the translator in prefaces, the role of translated children's books in the establishment of literary canons, the status of translations in the former East Germany; questions of taboo and censorship in the translation of adolescent novels, the collision of norms in different translations of a Swedish children's classic, the handling of 'cultural intertextuality' in the Spanish translations of contemporary British fantasy books, strategies for translating cultural markers such as juvenile expressions, functional shifts caused by different translation strategies dealing with character names, and complex translation strategies used in dealing with the dual audience in Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales and in Salman Rushdie's Haroun and the Sea of Stories.

" Margaret Mead said: Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. My version of that quote is: Never doubt that a community of thoughtful, committed women, filled with the power and love of God, using gifts they have identified and developed, and pursuing passions planted in them by God never doubt that these women can change the world. Lynne Hybels Nice Girls are taught early that serving God means earning God s love and sacrificing oneself to meet the needs of others. Unfortunately, after living a life she thought was what God demanded, her husband wanted, her kids needed, and her church expected, Lynne Hybels felt utterly lost both to herself and to God. In this wise and tender book, Hybels tells of her struggle to stop living someone else s life and to reclaim the unique gifts, strengths, and passions God gave her. And she reveals how turning away from her false view of God as a harsh and demanding taskmaster enabled her to rest at last in God s sustaining love. As she explains, it s never too late to discover Quku : A Mixed Grain Multi-Layered Reconfigurable Architecture download book that who you really are is exactly what delights God and what the world needs."

Ludwig Wittgenstein,Rush Rhees: Philosophical Grammar

Philosophical Grammar

Description

Wittgenstein wrote the Philosophical Grammar during the years 1931 to 1934 -- the period just before he began to dictate the Blue Book. Although it is close to the Investigations in some points, and to the Phiosophische Bemerkungen at others, the Philosophical Grammar is an independent work which covers new ground. It is Wittgensteina s fullest treatment of logic and mathematics in their connection with his later understanding of a propositiona , a signa , and a systema . He also discusses inference and generality -- critisizing views of Frege and Russell as well as earlier views of his own -- and the treatment of mathematical proof in this book, especially of inductive or recursive proofs, is deeper and more extensive than previously.

Nina V Garcia: Parenting with Purpose : How to Raise Well-Behaved Children and Build a Strong Parent-Child Relationship

Parenting with Purpose : How to Raise Well-Behaved Children and Build a Strong Parent-Child Relationship

Description

In this practical, eye-opening and action-oriented book, Nina Garcia explains how to use connection to raise well-behaved kids and strengthen your parent-child relationship. You'll learn: - How to diffuse and prevent tantrums and outbursts - How to better communicate with your child - Practical advice on structuring your day around routines - The secret to starting your day off right with your child - How to parent calmly and not lose your temper - And so much more... Maybe you're fed up with your child's outbursts and wonder how many tantrums are too many. Or you want to address his behavior with empathy and patience rather than through punishment. Perhaps you want to lessen fighting as well as equip your child with the skills to prevent arguments in the first place. You've tried time-outs. Counting to three before they're really in trouble. Maybe you've lost your temper. Except nothing is working, at least in the long run. You continue to butt heads-and you're exhausted with having to deal with yet another day of disciplining. And here's why: we've got this discipline thing all wrong. We assume discipline is about punishment, or we assume it's what we need to take away from them to curb misbehavior. We mistakenly believe that the main purpose of discipline is to stop tantrums and outbursts at all costs, as quickly as possible. Let's get to the real definition of discipline: discipline is teaching our kids. Because isn't that what parenting really is? Your job is to arm them with the skills they need and would serve them well in the future so they grow into kind adults who can regulate emotions or empathize with others. They'll be adults who treat others with respect and don't expect the world to bow down to their wishes. The kind of person you'd want your child to eventually grow up to be. With each outburst comes the opportunity to help them develop these skills. They learn more about their feelings and appropriate ways to express them. A child who can articulate "mad" can identify that emotion and use techniques to convey frustration. So that next time, there won't be a tantrum to get their point across but rather a more mature discussion or a different way to control their temper. And the best way to discipline is through connection. As ironic as it sounds, we need to connect with our kids when they're acting up. The times when they're most unpleasant are when they need us the most. Connection works to prevent outbursts as well as better handle them when they inevitably happen. This doesn't mean you'll be permissive. You still need to enforce limits and set boundaries. You won't let your child continue to jump on the couch or color on the walls when he's not allowed to. But you focus on what you want your child to learn from the incident rather than only making sure he doesn't do it again. Because yes, it's important your child stops coloring the walls. But it's equally important for him to develop the skills to communicate and make better decisions. You don't accept the behavior, but you are there to guide him through it. This book provides you with the tools you need to handle conflict as you see fit. What worked one day may not work the next. And what worked for your first child may be ineffective with your second. You don't have to get it "just right." Parenting with Purpose is for parents who want to raise their children using intention and mindfulness. Are you ready to raise well-behaved kids and strengthen your relationship with your child? Scroll to the top of the page and get your copy now.

Tom Clancy: Red Rabbit

Red Rabbit

Description

Long before he was President or head of the CIA, before he fought terrorist attacks on the Super Bowl or the White House, even before a submarine named Red October made its perilous way across the Atlantic, Jack Ryan was an historian, teacher, and recent ex-Marine temporarily living in England while researching a book. A series of deadly encounters with an IRA splinter group had brought him to the attention of the CIA's Deputy Director, Vice Admiral James Greer as well as his counterpart with the British SIS, Sir Basil Charleston and when Greer asked him if he wanted to come aboard as a freelance analyst, Jack was quick to accept. The opportunity was irresistible, and he was sure he could fit it in with the rest of his work. And then Jack forgot all about the rest of his work, because one of his first assignments was to help debrief a high-level Soviet defector, and the defector told an amazing tale: Top Soviet officials, including Yuri Andropov, were planning to assassinate the Pope, John Paul II. Could it be true? As the days and weeks go by, Ryan must battle, first to try to confirm the plot, and then to prevent it, but this is a brave new world, and nothing he has done up to now has prepared him for the lethal game of cat-and-mouse that is the Soviet Union versus the United States. In the end, it will be not just the Pope's life but the stability of the Western world that is at stake. . . and it may already be too late for a novice CIA analyst to do anything about it. "Clancy creates not only compelling characters but frighteningly topical situations and heart-stopping action," wrote The Washington Post about The Bear and the Dragon. "Among the handful of superstars, Clancy still reigns, and he is not likely to be dethroned any time soon." These words were never truer than about the remarkable pages of his breathtaking new novel. This is Clancy at his best and there is none better. "

And there are loyalties history could never have foreseen. David Stevenson: The Origins of Freemasonry: Scotland's Century, 1590 - 1710

The Origins of Freemasonry: Scotland's Century, 1590 - 1710

Description

This is a classic account of the origins of freemasonry, a brotherhood of men bound together by secret initiatives, secret rituals and secret modes of identification with ideals of fraternity, equality, toleration and reason. Beginning in Britain, freemasonry swept across Europe in the mid-eighteenth century in astonishing fashion yet its origins are still hotly debated today. The prevailing assumption has been that it emerged in England around 1700, but David Stevenson demonstrates that the real origins of modern freemasonry lie in Scotland around 1600, when the system of lodges was created by stonemasons with rituals and secrets blending medieval mythology with Renaissance and seventeenth-century history. This fascinating work of historical detection will be essential reading for anyone interested in Renaissance and seventeenth-century history, for freemasons themselves, and for those readers captivated by the secret societies at the heart of the bestselling Da Vinci Code.

This book covers both the theory and practice of behaviour management from birth to adolescence. Written as a guide for students, it should also be useful to primary teachers, classroom assistants, workers in social care and playworkers. Section 1 covers child development, influences on children's behaviour and explores reasons why unwanted behaviour can occur. Section The Origins of Freemasonry: Scotland's Century, 1590 - 1710 download book 2 offers practical strategies for managing behaviour. Useful case studies and sources of further information are included. Footprint Travel Photography is all you will ever need to improve your photography, no matter where the location. The revised second edition, written by leading travel photographer Steve Davey, takes you from the vital preparation and selecting of equipment, to the ins and outs of being on the road. Broken down by technique and photography style, rather than destination, the layout of this book makes it easy for you to decide what kind of picture you're trying to take and find, at a glance, the right techniques for you - whether you are at a local beauty spot or thousands of miles from home. It exhaustively covers the technical and practical aspects of travel photography before looking at how to tweak and improve your pictures on a computer, and includes a section for those who would like to make some money out of their hobby.

Bradley C Alan 1938-: The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie

The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie

Description

In his wickedly brilliant first novel, Debut Dagger Award winner Alan Bradley introduces one of the most singular and engaging heroines in recent fiction: eleven-year-old Flavia de Luce, an aspiring chemist with a passion for poison. It is the summer of 1950—and a series of inexplicable events has struck Buckshaw, the decaying English mansion that Flavia’s family calls home. A dead bird is found on the doorstep, a postage stamp bizarrely pinned to its beak. Hours later, Flavia finds a man lying in the cucumber patch and watches him as he takes his dying breath. For Flavia, who is both appalled and delighted, life begins in earnest when murder comes to Buckshaw. “I wish I could say I was afraid, but I wasn’t. Quite the contrary. This was by far the most interesting thing that had ever happened to me in my entire life.” To Flavia the investigation is the stuff of science: full of possibilities, contradictions, and connections. Soon her father, a man raising his three daughters alone, is seized, accused of murder. And in a police cell, during a violent thunderstorm, Colonel de Luce tells his daughter an astounding story—of a schoolboy friendship turned ugly, of a priceless object that vanished in a bizarre and brazen act of thievery, of a Latin teacher who flung himself to his death from the school’s tower thirty years before. Now Flavia is armed with more than enough knowledge to tie two distant deaths together, to examine new suspects, and begin a search that will lead her all the way to the King of England himself. Of this much the girl is sure: her father is innocent of murder—but protecting her and her sisters from something even worse…. An enthralling mystery, a piercing depiction of class and society, The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie is a masterfully told tale of deceptions—and a rich literary delight. From the Hardcover edition.

Comedy / 3m, 1f / Int. Recently revived at New York's Circle in the Square, where Seymour Hoffman and John C. Reilly alternated playing the roles of the brothers, this American classic explores alternatives that might spring from the demented terrain of the California landscape. Sons of a desert dwelling alcoholic and a suburban wanderer clash over a film script. Austin, the achiever, is working on a script he has sold The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie free download pdf to producer Sal Kimmer when Lee, a demented petty thief, drops in. He pitches his own idea for a movie to Kimmer, who then wants Austin to junk his bleak, modern love story and write Lee's trashy Western tale. "Shepard's masterwork.... It tells us a truth, as glimpsed by a 37 year old genius." - New York Post "It's clear, funny, naturalistic. It's also opaque, terrifying, surrealistic. If that sounds contradictory, you're on to one aspect of Shepard's winning genius; the ability to make you think you're watching one thing while at the same time he's presenting another." - San Francisco Chronicle

Everything You Need to Know About the Law of Attraction. .

America Mason, a sassy undergrad at Eastern State University, is in love with a Maddox--Shepley Maddox. Unlike his cousins, Shepley is more lover than fighter, but a road trip to her parents' home in Wichita, Kansas could mean the next step, or the end of everything. Thousands of people need to learn to communicate in Japanese for practical reasons, and cannot dedicate the many years it takes to speak formal Japanese correctly. This book is for people who want a functional knowledge of spoken Japanese. With realistic dialogues that reflect situations you might encounter in Japan, comics to make learning easier, and many practical examples, it will help you to become conversant in the language. One of our finest critics gives us an altogether original history of rock 'n' roll Unlike all previous versions of rock 'n' roll history, this book omits almost every iconic performer Your Chinese Horoscope 2013: What the Year of the Snake Holds in Store for You download epub and ignores the storied events and turning points that everyone knows. Instead, in a daring stroke, Greil Marcus selects ten songs recorded between 1956 and 2008, then proceeds to dramatize how each embodies rock 'n' roll as a thing in itself, in the story it tells, inhabits, and acts out-a new language, something new under the sun. "Transmission" by Joy Division. "All I Could Do Was Cry" by Etta James and then Beyonce. "To Know Him Is to Love Him," first by the Teddy Bears and almost half a century later by Amy Winehouse. In Marcus's hands these and other songs tell the story of the music, which is, at bottom, the story of the desire for freedom in all its unruly and liberating glory. Slipping the constraints of chronology, Marcus braids together past and present, holding up to the light the ways that these striking songs fall through time and circumstance, gaining momentum and meaning, astonishing us by upending our presumptions and prejudices.

A Fabumouse School Adventure

Description

When my nephew, Benjamin, invited me to Career Day at his school, things did not turn out the way I expected. I caused a volcanic explosion, got tangled in the tunnel slide on the playground, and accidentally let the class's pet gecko out of its cage!

But they weren't the only Great Beasts in the war. A deadly scheme was already underway, hatched by two of their own. To save their world, the four had to give up their lives. This beautifully illustrated volume tells the story of Britain and its people over two thousand years, from the coming of the Roman legions to the present day. Encompassing political, social, economic, and cultural developments throughout the British Isles, the dramatic narrative is taken up in turn by ten leading historians who offer the fruits of the best modern scholarship to the general reader in an authoritative form, illuminating their text with carefully chosen pictures and maps. A vivid, sometimes surprising picture emerges of a continuous turmoil of change in every period, and the wider social context of political and economic tension is made clear. But consensus, no less than conflict, is a part of the story: in focusing on elements of continuity down the centuries, the authors bring out that special awareness of identity which has been such a distinctive feature of British society. By relating both these factors in the British experience, and by exploring the many ways in which Britain has shaped and been shaped by contact with Europe and the wider world, this landmark work brings the reader face to Empress Orchid download ebook pdf face with the past, and the foundations of modern British society.

Empress Orchid

Description

To rescue her family from poverty and avoid marrying her slope-shouldered cousin, seventeen-year-old Orchid competes to be one of the Emperor's wives. When she is chosen as a lower-ranking concubine she enters the erotically charged and ritualised Forbidden City. But beneath its immaculate facade lie whispers of murders and ghosts, and the thousands of concubines will stoop to any lengths to bear the Emperor's son. Orchid trains herself in the art of pleasuring a man, bribes her way into the royal bed, and seduces the monarch, drawing the attention of dangerous foes. Little does she know that China will collapse around her, and that she will be its last Empress.

But they weren't the only Great Beasts in the war. A deadly scheme was already underway, hatched by two of their own. To save their world, the four had to give up their lives. Greg Costikyan: Uncertainty in Games

Uncertainty in Games

Description

In life, uncertainty surrounds us. Things that we thought were good for us turn out to be bad for us (and vice versa); people we thought we knew well behave in mysterious ways; the stock market takes a nosedive. Thanks to an inexplicable optimism, most of the time we are fairly cheerful about it all. But we do devote much effort to managing and ameliorating uncertainty. Is it any wonder, then, asks Greg Costikyan, that we have taken this aspect of our lives and transformed it culturally, making a series of elaborate constructs that subject us to uncertainty but in a fictive and nonthreatening way? That is: we create games. In this concise and entertaining book, Costikyan, an award-winning game designer, argues that games require uncertainty to hold our interest, and that the struggle to master uncertainty is central to their appeal. Game designers, he suggests, can harness the idea of uncertainty to guide their work. Costikyan explores the many sources of uncertainty in many sorts of games -- from Super Mario Bros. to Rock/Paper/Scissors, from Monopoly to CityVille, from FPS Deathmatch play to Chess. He describes types of uncertainty, including performative uncertainty, analytic complexity, and narrative anticipation. And he suggest ways that game designers who want to craft novel game experiences can use an understanding of game uncertainty in its many forms to improve their designs.
